We don’t usually focus on all of the benefits from quitting, and of course it is not just your health that will benefit — Your finances can improve as well!

Here’s a quick and easy way to calculate the money you are spending per week, per month, and per year.

-Take the weekly cost of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day: 1 pack a day x 7 days x $_____ (cost per pack) = $_____ (cost per week).

-For the monthly cost of smoking a pack of cigarettes per day: 1 pack a day x 30 days x $_____ (cost per pack) = $_____ (cost per month).

-And the big number, the annual cost: $_____ (cost per week) x 52 weeks = $_____ (cost per year).

As a simple example, if you are living in Oregon or Colorado, then you pay an average of $5.75 per pack. This means that your weekly cost is $40.25. What could you get from one of your favorite stores for that price? Or where would you have dinner?

Now let’s talk about your monthly cost of smoking. And picture yourself in June, summer is starting, and the days are longer. You are spending an average of $161.00! Imagine if you quit in June and July — you would have enough for a round-trip flight to Hawaii!

To end this agony, your annual cost of smoking is over $2,000 ($2,093, to be exact). That’s a lot of cash going up in smoke!

Take a deep breath, inhale all that information, and think back to all the years you’ve been smoking. 5 years? 15? 30? How much has this habit cost you? Was it worth it?

I’d love to read your reaction to this calculation, and your actual cost of smoking below, if you feel like sharing. Writing about it will make it more tangible and bring it closer to your awareness, which will help get you closer to a potential next step: quitting.
